Getting Better

Tatiana is now extubated and had surgery for a peritoneal dialysis catheter placement. This is a more permanent type of dialysis that will be continual. She had to have an omentectomy, where they remove the omentum (fatty layer in the abdomen, which attaches to infections) She also had a belly button hernia, which aparently she was born with; where they pulled out the omentum, because it will clog the catheter if they leave it in. The surgeon fixed the hernia, but her belly button is now gathered skin stitched together. The catheter goes to the stomach and tunnels into the abdominal space. The catheter needs to heal for a couple of weeks before it is used, and this type of dialysis is very risky for her, because of infection, and I will be the one doing the dialysis for her, here in the hospital and at home. She is on 1 liter of oxygen on a nasal canula and is smiling and laughing! We are still in the PICU and do not wish to leave until we have to go home, we love the nurses and doctors here :)
